What to do in a Dental Emergency

During Clinic Hours

  • Call us as soon as possible on 8258 3883
  • Explain your symptoms so that we can recommend appropriate next steps and prioritise your appointment if suitable to be managed in our practice

Alternate Care in Business Hours or After Hours/Weekends

  • For alternate care during business hours call SA Dental Emergency Service: 1300 008 222. They provide advice and can direct you to urgent care
  • Outside of business hours please call healthdirect on 1800 022 222

When to Go to the Hospital

  • Facial swelling affecting breathing or swallowing
  • Severe trauma to the face, jaw, or teeth
  • Uncontrolled bleeding or infection
  • Go to the nearest hospital emergency department right away

If a Tooth is Knocked Out

  • Pick it up by the crown (top), not the root
  • Rinse gently and briefly with milk or saline. Do not scrub
  • Place back into the socket if possible, or keep in milk
  • Seek urgent dental treatment as soon as possible

Other Tips

  • For pain relief, take over the counter medication like paracetamol or ibuprofen (if safe for you)
  • Apply a cold pack to the outside of your face to reduce swelling
  • Avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums
